Hello all,
Welcome to another edition of On Watch. I was pleased to listen in on the special event at the Chantier Davie shipyard where Prime Minister Trudeau announced that the federal government has reached an agreement with the yard to become the third strategic partner under the National Shipbuilding Strategy. This is excellent news not only for the yard, but for the entire Canadian supply chain supporting our national shipbuilding projects.
This edition features a member spotlight with Maggie Kennedy of Graphite Innovation & Technologies (GIT), a very innovative company that produces graphene-based marine coatings that are paving the way for more sustainable and eco-friendly vessel coatings. GIT is an example of a company that is committed to a cleaner future and its products support the reduction of carbon emissions, something which Budget 2023 prioritized. Graphite Innovation & Technologies (GIT) is a leading Canadian based sustainable coatings company that produces graphene-based, biocide-free marine coatings that help ship operators save time and money, all the while helping them meet their sustainability goals. GIT’s coatings are lighter, stronger and more durable than traditional silicon-based coatings, and this keeps vessels clean and reduces drag, which makes them more efficient. Fuel efficiency gains can measure up to 20%.
One of the most exciting benefits of GIT’s sustainable coatings, according to project manager, Maggie Kennedy, is the lightened footprint on sensitive marine ecosystems. Most vessel coatings leech into the water, but GIT’s coatings are durable and clean enough not to release harmful toxins. Moreover, it is very difficult for marine life to grow onto the low-friction coatings, which leads to improved fuel efficiency and fewer routine hull and propeller cleanings.
GIT provides full service to its customers, from production of coatings in Nova Scotia, 24-hour customer support, and inspection services. GIT is currently working to automate their production process to increase capacity to meet growing demand. Another benefit to GIT’s coating is that they last longer, so the hulls and propellers need less frequent dry docking. This is very important since it’s a major cost saving to ship owners as dry docking is timely and expensive.
GIT has a small team of about 20 employees but is growing quickly as its heavy R&D focus is now commercializing. There are many opportunities to partner and grow in the Canadian shipbuilding industry, but there is also great export potential that GIT is taking advantage of to sell to international markets.
In a company that lives and breathes sustainability and diversity in all it does, Maggie enjoys the positive and exciting workplace. “GIT is a great company to work for,” she enthuses, “I get the opportunity to work on many different types of projects. It’s an excellent opportunity and there is lots to learn every day. In a company that is actively recruiting women, it feels like we have come a long way in the marine sector.”
As a CMISA member, Maggie and the rest of the GIT team appreciates that there are so many opportunities to tell the GIT story to members across Canada. As part of an East Coast hub of shipbuilding and ocean research, GIT is well-placed to contribute to a more sustainable marine sector in Canada.

Special Information
Budget 2023
A key priority of Budget 2023 is to transition to a low-carbon future with a made-in-Canada plan centred on three tiers of federal financial incentives:
- Investment tax credits
- Low-cost strategic financing
- Targeted GoC investments and programming
The low carbon economy focus in Budget 2023 attempts to put Canada on a competitive footing with the US and its Inflation Reduction Act, noting at the same time that US domestic content can include Canada so there are opportunities for Canadian companies
Strengthening Trade
Budget 2023 proposes a number of initiatives to strengthen trade, which can benefit Canadian marine sector companies to expand their markets:
- Establishing a National Supply Chain Strategy with strategic trade corridor investments
- Ensuring preferred free trade access to the whole G7 and two-thirds of global consumers through the new NAFTA, the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership
Canada Growth Fund
Budget 2023 proposes a new Investment Tax Credit for Clean Technology Manufacturing:
- Refundable tax credit of 30% of the cost of investments in manufacturing machinery and equipment used in a broad range of production, extraction, processing and recycling activities
- The total cost will be about $1B
- The Canada Growth Fund will be managed by the Public Sector Pension Investment Board, an arm’s length organization that will allow the Canada Growth Fund to move quickly and being making investments to support the growth of Canada’s clean economy.
- The Infrastructure Bank will also invest $20B to support clean growth infrastructure
Getting Major Projects Done
Expedited impact assessment and permitting processes for major projects will increase the speed by which businesses can get projects moving. The focus on timelines to enact policies was welcomed by Canadian business leaders as it will help Canadian businesses keep up with the U.S., which is already offering tax credits and other incentives to help heavy industry decarbonize.
- $1.3B over 6 years to departments and agencies to improve the efficiency of assessments for major projects
- By the end of 2023 the GoC will have a plan to improve the efficiency of impact assessments and permitting processes for major projects
Student Work Placement Program
Budget 2023 proposes to invest $197.7M in 2024-25 to the Student Work Placement Program for work-integrated learning opportunities for students through partnerships between employers and post-secondary institutions, which can provide marine sector employers with the opportunity to develop relationships that can yield talented new employees.
Strengthening Canada’s Trade Corridors
Budget 2023 will provide investments to strengthen Canada’s transportation systems and supply chain infrastructure:
- $27.2 M over five years for a Transportation Supply Chain Office
- Develop a long-term roadmap for Canada’s transportation infrastructure
- $25 M over five years to develop transportation supply chain data
- Launch a review of the Shipping Conferences Exemption Act to improve marine shipping competition
Safe and Reliable Ferry Services in Eastern Canada
- $29.9 M over two years for the Ferry Services Contribution Program
Green Shipping Corridor Program
$165.4 M over seven years to establish a Green Shipping Corridor Program to reduce the impact of marine shipping on surrounding communities and ecosystems. The program will help spur the launch of the next generation of clean ships, invest in shore power technology, and prioritize low-emission and low-noise vessels at ports.

Canadian Women in Ocean Industries Leadership (CWOIL) Conference
The Canadian Women in Ocean Industries Leadership (CWOIL) 2022 Conference will take place May 9-11, 2023 at the Delta Hotel in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. The Conference will bring together 200+ ocean professionals in the ocean sector, including representation from equity seeking groups: 2SLGBTQ+ community; Indigenous communities; persons with disabilities; and racialized people. The CWOIL initiative aims to attract, develop and retain a robust, diverse and inclusive talent pipeline that includes women from all origins to enable and accelerate Canadian innovation, research and technology development, and market and export leadership, in ocean industries. From November 14 – 16, 2022, the CWOIL Conference will see further discussions that will formulate an action plan for ensuring more women become leaders in ocean industries. Additionally, there will be a celebration of current female leaders in ocean industries.
