Methane Slip from Gas-Fuelled Ships Back in the Spotlight
Policymakers have been urged to consider increasing the default methane slip value to at least 6% for the most common LNG engine on the back of the International Council on Clean Transportation study from the two-year Fugitive and Unburned Methane Emissions from the Ships project, a collaboration between the ICCT, Danish emissions monitoring firm Explicit, and the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research.
Switching to Ammonia as Marine Fuel May Create More Problems than it Solves
As part of the study from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, researchers carried out life cycle analyses for batteries and for three electrofuels including ammonia. Eutrophication and acidification are some of the environmental problems that can be traced to the use of ammonia – as well as emissions of laughing gas, which is a very potent greenhouse gas.

In an experiment in 2021, the US Navy unmanned surface vessel Ranger sailed from the West Coast with an innocuous shipping container that hid a guided-missile launcher. Off the coast of California, the container opened and fired a Standard Missile 6 – ordinarily a mainstay of guided-missile warships equipped with powerful air search radars and the complex Aegis Combat System.
Maritime Single Window in Effect Since January 1
The Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL), requires Governments to use a single digital platform or “Maritime Single Window” to share and exchange information with ships when they call at ports, from 1 January 2024. This will streamline procedures to clear the arrival, stay and departure of ships and greatly enhance the efficiency of shipping worldwide. LNG Carrier Deliveries this Year to Smash Previous Record by Close to 50%
