Hello all,

Welcome to another edition of On Watch! It was great to see so many of you at the very busy CANSEC 2023 where more than a few interesting announcements were made by our maritime community. If we did not have a chance to speak, I will be attending the H2O Conference in Halifax next week as well so please do reach out and contact me if you would like to meet.

We are very excited to have announced last week that we aim to take a contingent of SMEs to WorkBoat in New Orleans this fall. This will be our first Team Canada style pavilion, but we are already looking at other possible initiatives and destinations for next year.

In this edition we are pleased to feature Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence’s Sara Raja. Hexagon is bringing its expertise in metrology to help Canada’s shipbuilding and repair sector create datasets of vessels and parts that will prove useful for decades to come. With business expanding quickly, Hexagon is proving that our sector is providing companies with excellent opportunities. We are very pleased to highlight the many innovations of our members in On Watch. If you are not yet a member, but would like to be, we encourage you to join here! If you know of others who might benefit from membership, please share the sign-up link.

As you may have noticed, our job board is now self-serve and far less expensive! You are now able to post opportunities online without having to coordinate it with anyone. And due to that change, we are now able to reduce the cost to $49 per job per month for members and $99 for non-members. Please give it a try and let us know of any feedback. We are here to help. You will find the link here.

If you are reading this for the first time thanks to it being passed along to you, you are welcome to sign up for future editions here –  it’s free and we never share your emails with anyone. We publish our newsletter every two weeks and bring you news, procurement opportunities and features that pertain to our sector.

Finally, if you would like to provide us with feedback and input into items you would like to see covered in this newsletter, or if you would like us to create a unique member spotlight of your company, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence

Hexagon brings the experience of a large, multinational company to specific solutions that capture, measure and visualize digital worlds to the Canadian shipbuilding market. Hexagon’s solutions help maintain up-to-date design, engineering and operational data through metrology equipment including laser trackers that are industry standard. For shipbuilding industry in particular, these tools can be further utilized for alignment (ex. shaft alignment, radar alignment, virtual alignment), reverse engineering (ex. Propeller), checking for deformations (ex. Hull deformation) and digital twin and assembly simulation.

Hexagon’s ability to perform large-scale scanning of vessels to capture data will help shipyards and vessel owners over the long lifespans of the vessels, according to Hexagon’s Territory Manager, Sara Raja. The datasets in the form of point cloud can even be used for the recreation of parts down the line, along with alignment and deflection checks to name a few. “What we do,” says Sara, “is metrology, which is the scientific study of measurement. We help manufacturers measure parts, we help shipyards with large-scale scanning for various purposes including alignment, and we are seeing huge demand for our services now as shipbuilding and ship repair are booming in Canada.”

As Hexagon’s Territory Manager since 2019, Sara has seen the growth of the company in Canada, with three solution centers across the nation. Hexagon is an exciting place to work as the company reinvests a portion of its profits into research and development to continuously improve its offerings to customers. “We are seeing huge momentum here in Canada now. We have several facilities across the country, including Greater Toronto Area, Calgary and Montreal. We are excited to continue serving the needs of the market, as the demand for high-quality and reliable measurement increases.”

An immigrant from Pakistan with a background in marketing, management and business development, Hexagon also provides Sara with fulfilling work. She very much enjoys working with a unique and diverse set of customers and realized early on that she enjoyed the face-to-face interactions her work gives her.  As a busy new mom to two young children, Hexagon also provides a supportive work environment. As Sara says, “My work here is so fulfilling, I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t. That says a lot about Hexagon’s corporate culture. As a woman in a male-dominated sector, working for a company that has initiatives to increase leadership positions for women is important to me.”

Being a member of the Canadian Marine Industries and Shipbuilding Association is of great value to Hexagon. As Sara puts it, being part of a larger network helps Hexagon’s exposure into a growing industry, and lets potential customers know more about solutions the company provides – it’s a win-win situation.
