Words from the CEO

cmisapresidentimg-jan272021.jpg

Welcome to another edition of On Watch. I was very interested in the news emerging out of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) on the announcement of the intention of 19 countries, including Canada, to support the establishment of green shipping corridors. The Clydebank Declaration will help to lower emissions in the shipping sector. This is good news for our sector, as many of our members across the country are busy developing and implementing new, greener technologies to reduce emissions and help make our marine world more sustainable.

Our Member Spotlight this edition features ship design and marine architecture firm Vard Marine. The discussion with Vice President, Business Operations Kristin Jovel highlights the pride with which Vard incorporates new technologies and innovations into its design process, to challenge itself to produce more efficient and sustainable vessels for its clients. If you would like to join our growing number of members and enjoy our attractive member benefits, including original editorial content like these Member Spotlights, please contact support@cmisa.ca and we would be thrilled to get you on board.

Please also take a look at our newly launched Maritime Sector Job Board, and head over to our website to have a look - you will find a link, as always, at the bottom of this newsletter. We are constantly adding new opportunities from across the country.

Happy reading!

Colin Cooke

Member Spotlight: Vard Marine

Designing ships is in Vard Marine’s DNA. Since Vard Marine was formed 40 years ago here in Canada, the company has grown tremendously and taken on a wide range of commercial and military vessel design projects both at home and abroad. The company is now part of VARD Group AS in Norway, a Fincantieri company, which means that a wealth of international ship design experience is now available to be used on Canadian projects, from all the way back from when, as Vice President, Business Operations Kristin Jovel puts it, ships were built by the “Vikings of the world.” Vard employees bring passion, experience, a love of ships, and many generations of family experience in the marine sector to the table. The design side of shipbuilding is fascinating to every member of the Vard team, and the ability to contribute and then see all the work come to life on real ships is satisfying, and, as Kristin puts it, “a pretty special experience” for everyone involved.

The technology and knowledge transfer developed in Canada from these outside experiences is instrumental in building a robust capacity in Canada, and to educate service teams to keep work here at home. Vard takes great pride in rising to the challenges of keeping the industry alive and thriving in Canada with the National Shipbuilding Strategy as well as with our vibrant commercial sector.

Vard’s corporate pedigree and legacy, combined with the desire to keep challenging the company and all its partners to innovate is what makes Vard unique as a ship design and naval architecture firm. Vard also supports and sponsors several university programs to encourage and develop new research, talent, and the workers of the future. Autonomous systems, green technologies, alternate fuels and accommodating more diverse crews are some of the ingredients that Vard Marine uses to design vessels that meet the needs of navies and commercial shipbuilders today and in the future.

Being part of the Canadian Marine Industries and Shipbuilding Association has proven valuable to Vard, as the networking and sharing of expertise has put the team in touch with a wide arrange of like-minded companies across the country. This allows Vard to bring an even greater range of new ideas into their designs. As Kristin points out, “It’s like baking this crazy recipe. We take in all these new innovations, ideas and experiences and see what kind of new cake we can bake with it.” Vard is excited to be part of the growth and drive in the shipbuilding sector in Canada.
