From Colin's Desk

Welcome to another edition of On Watch! I wrote this note a few days early as I was attending the Naval Quebec symposium in Lévis when the newsletter was finalized this week. I have been looking forward to seeing many of our readers at our Canadian trade shows across the country this fall and of course, we will see many of you in New Orleans at the WorkBoat Show in November. There might even be a spot in the Team Canada booth left if you are interested and reach out quickly!

I would like to draw to your attention a series of cyber awareness webinars being put on in collaboration with the government’s Cyber Centre and the regional marine associations across the country. The sessions are free and are there to help your teams ensure that you have a general understanding of what is already a critical issue. Please check out our Events page for both series of sessions in either English or French as there are options for each.

I am delighted that we are presenting long-standing member, Dominis Engineering in our Spotlight this issue. It always seems a little unusual to have such a significant manufacturer of propellors located in suburban Ottawa but that simply speaks to the national nature of our sector – our companies are everywhere across the country and can work with anyone, anywhere! Member Spotlights are one way that we focus on telling stories about our members and increasing their visibility. If anyone reading this is not a member or knows of someone who would like to be a member, please join here.

I hope you enjoy this edition of On Watch with news from across our sector, both here and abroad, procurement opportunities, events and more.

All the best!

Dominis Engineering Ltd.

Dominis Engineering Ltd. is a Canadian company based in Ottawa that specializes in designing and manufacturing high-performance marine propellers. Established in 1985, Dominis is a leader that uses advanced manufacturing technology to produce propellers for the Canadian and American Navies, Coast Guards as well as a defence company in Italy.

Dominis’ manufacturing process makes exceptionally robust and consistent propellers. Xuhe Wu, an engineer at Dominis, describes the Dominis process of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling to ‘final form and finish” as a game-changer in making propellers. The whole propeller is CNC milled in one setup, without robotic and hand grinding. Dominis machining process eliminates inconsistencies that occur during hand grinding. Xuhe says, “All propellers are exactly the same as their CAD model, and the edges can be as sharp as the designer wants.”  The propellers manufactured by Dominis closely replicate the designer’s wishes with tolerances exceeding the requirements of class S ISO 484 propeller manufacturing standard.

The propellers produced by Dominis perform exceptionally well in sea trials. Another important offering by Dominis is the ability of the company to take older propellers and create a model and then remake them. As Xuhe says, these new propellers are much better and more efficient than the older ones and can be easily installed. The advantage is that the ship’s hull does not need to be redone as only the propeller is replaced.

Xuhe joined Dominis in 1997 after she emigrated to Canada from China. She brought significant experience to Dominis as she had worked on the same type of milling machines in China. The only woman on the team, Xuhe explains that in China many women work in mechanical areas, and that is a mindset she has brought with her to her work.  She very much enjoys the excellent team and the work, as it allows them to solve problems together. The ability to work on such expert technology is a great opportunity, and Xuhe is very proud to work on the exciting projects at Dominis. As she says, “not many people can do this work, and the clients are very impressed with the results.”

Dominis’ superior propellers provide the company with significant advantages with a very promising future, both in domestic and international markets. The company continues the production for the US Navy and is also looking forward to an increase in demand from a European partner for propellers designed for autonomous underwater vessels. Dominis is currently planning sea trial research to measure the impact of machining propellers without any robotic and hand-grinding on underwater radiated noise, fuel efficiency, and speed.

HMCS Sackville

HMCS Sackville is the last surviving WWII corvette, and she needs your financial support to keep her afloat. These “cheap and nasties” were born out of a need to defend convoys from the German U-boat threat. Like their French naval predecessors, Canadian corvettes were built on an old single-hulled whaler design. We re-plated over the original steel in 2020, however Sackville requires a new hull to remain in the water for posterity.
