From Colin's Desk

Colin Cooke

Hello from my busy desk to yours!

I’ve had the great pleasure of seeing some of our sector activities first-hand recently and am so impressed with the flurry of activity. If summer is any indication, then we in for a busy fall on our waterways, ports, yards and in marine sector companies across the country. We are pleased to share with you some highlights of the news of our sector and the many procurement opportunities available. If you are reading On Watch for the first time thanks to it being passed along to you, you are welcome to sign up for future editions here, it’s free and we never share your emails with anyone.

In this edition we feature SSI, a company specializing in shipbuilding software. Digital transformation in the shipbuilding arena is key to the present and future of shipbuilding. SSI understands the unique and diverse skillsets of its employees and focusses on keeping team members happy and committed to SSI so that the company can maintain its leadership in the sector by maintaining its expert workforce. Today more than ever we realize how important it is to build up a strong shipbuilding capacity and including workforce development as part of that capacity-building.

Finally, as always, please take note of our Job Board and a) take advantage of it if your company has an opening and b) send links to friends and family so that we can attract new people into our sector. We all need the help!

Stay safe and I am looking forward to seeing you soon,

Colin Cooke

SSI is a software company that specializes in complete solutions for every facet of shipbuilding and offshore projects. SSI understands that shipbuilding projects are unique and massive, with lifecycles measured in decades. As more and more shipbuilding activities transition to digital, successful digital transformation is vital for all involved in the process. In order to do so, SSI offers shipbuilders strategic partnerships to achieve digital success.

Founded over 30 years ago, SSI uses industry-standard, commercial-grade platforms that users are already familiar with. This allows them to get up to speed on the SSI software quickly, a key benefit for shipbuilders. SSI’s open enterprise architecture supports current and future activities and can easily use data from existing sources.

Keeping the team whole and happy is critically important to the company. Lois Macorol, HR Coordinator, discusses the corporate values and work environment that allow SSI employees to succeed. The company has a relatively flat structure and provides employees many opportunities for growth, including new roles. SSI places a lot of value on keeping its team engaged and focuses on providing high levels of job satisfaction. This in turn encourages employees to keep their experiences and skills with the company and not move elsewhere. An example, as Lois explains, is that SSI regularly conducts “stay” interviews, which she describes as informal yet intentional discussions with each individual employee aimed at strengthening their engagement and retention within the organization.

Each SSI team member is recognized and valued for being a “whole person”, and encouraged, as Lois describes it, “to have the authentic freedom to bring forward ideas and weigh in regardless of the role they have within the company”. SSI embraces diversity in all its forms, welcomes employees of all backgrounds, and is committed to providing true work-life balance by allowing for flexibility of work schedules and remote locations. SSI is thus able to build its future by leveraging its employees to their best abilities. Being open and flexible is a trait that sets both the SSI software and the SSI corporate workplace apart.

Leveraging relationships is what attracts Lois and SSI to be a member of CMISA. As a medium-sized Canadian company, learning about the insights and opportunities within the shipbuilding community are key to success. Membership brings SSI closer to its peers in the rapidly changing marine industry so that the company can remain agile and adaptable.
