From Colin's Desk

Hello all,

Welcome to On Watch. And welcome to our first edition of our newsletter for 2025. I trust that everyone had a joyful yet restful holiday season as we will all need to be on our toes for what is sure to be a very interesting year ahead. On the political front, I have been keeping an eye on what is happening on the Ice Pact file in particular and am pleased to share that there will be many positive goings-on happening here in Ottawa over the next few weeks. We will soon have some clear opportunities to engage with our government teams so that our voices are heard, and our strengths are promoted in order that the end result works for our entire Canadian marine sector. For now, please see the MoU as released by the Americans just before the holidays – it’s in the News section below.

Our Member Spotlights are starting up again next edition but this week, we are delighted to share a brief introduction to an important skills initiative that companies in our sector can become more engaged with. The Indigenous Skills and Employment Training program is yet another tool in the toolbox for addressing our skills shortages through working more closely with our friends and neighbours from the indigenous communities across the country. I would encourage you to check out the links and reach out to find out more.

As mentioned, our Partners Spotlight this week replaces our usual Member Spotlight. These bespoke pieces are one way that we focus on telling stories about our members and increasing their visibility. If anyone reading this is not a member or knows of someone who would like to be a member, please join here.

All the best for 2025!

Advancing Indigenous Efforts and Relationships in the Marine Industry

Indegenous Skills and Employment Training Program

The Canadian marine industry is at a pivotal moment. With increasing demand for skilled labor and the growing importance of diversity in the workforce, Indigenous communities across Canada are stepping forward to address these challenges through innovative talent development programs.

Indigenous peoples have long been integral to Canada’s maritime history, contributing traditional knowledge and sustainable practices to our coastal and inland waterways. Today, these communities are driving new initiatives aimed at fostering skills and leadership within the marine sector, helping to fill the workforce gap while advancing reconciliation and equity.

Programs such as the Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) program and community-based apprenticeship initiatives are designed to equip Indigenous individuals with the technical expertise and certifications required for careers in shipbuilding, marine operations, and related fields. By creating tailored training opportunities, these programs are helping companies meet the dual goals of building a robust workforce and fulfilling diversity, equity, and inclusion objectives.

The benefits of these efforts are multifaceted. Indigenous workers bring unique perspectives and a deep respect for the natural environment, enriching the industry with values of sustainability and stewardship. Additionally, by actively partnering with Indigenous organizations and educational institutions, companies can create meaningful pathways to economic prosperity for Indigenous communities while addressing the industry's critical talent shortages.

As the marine industry charts its course forward, Indigenous participation is not just a matter of inclusion—it’s a strategic advantage. By celebrating and supporting these efforts, we collectively strengthen the marine sector while honoring Canada’s commitment to reconciliation and diversity.

Let us continue to champion these initiatives and work collaboratively to ensure a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive future for the Canadian marine industry.

For more information about Indigenous training programs or partnership opportunities, please visit: Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET), contact Indigenous Skills, Employment, Apprenticeship and Development (ISEAD) at mconwaydiels@aabo.ca or vvanderwyk@aabo.ca for further information and connections.
