The Canadian Coast Guard has taken delivery of a new search and rescue (SAR) boat built by shipyard Chantier Naval Forillon based in Quebec, named the CCGS Baie des Chaleurs . The aluminium-hulled SAR boat was built to a design by naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd (RAL) in compliance to Lloyd’s Register’s Special Service Craft rules.

Work is underway on the build of the new £12 million Applied Shipbuilding Academy at BAE Systems’ Scotstoun shipyard on the banks of the River Clyde in Glasgow. The project will see a historic industrial building at the site retrofitted to become the Modern Trade Hall, which will be dedicated to each shipbuilding trade, ship-realistic mock up environments, and research and technology facilities. The latest statistics from DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight platform found that a total of 298 ships with alternative fuel propulsion were ordered in 2023 – an 8% increase year on year. The year also saw methanol go mainstream, with a sharp increase in orders (138), thereby overtaking LNG (130).

The new ship for the Souris-Cap-aux-Meules service is still in the design stage by Davie (along with the Holiday Island replacement) and the current "temporary replacement" ship the Madeleine II appears to be in for a long run - until 2029 at least.
