Hello everyone,

Welcome to another summer edition of On Watch, and it’s encouraging to see our waterways, ports, shipyards and supply chain so busy all across the country! We’ve been busy too with plans for the fall, including adding more editorial content for our newsletter. If any of our readers have specific suggestions, please do send them along to info@cmisa.ca. And please note that if you are reading On Watch for the first time thanks to it being passed along to you, you are welcome to sign up for future editions here – it’s free and we never share emails with anyone.

In this edition we feature an interview with Yasemin Mensah, Global General Manager Wärtsilä Canada Incorporated, a company that has been in Canada for over 30 years. As we learn from Yasemin, Wärtsilä is serious about sustainability, and has a strong plan with defined steps, starting with a focus on decarbonisation. Like many of our members, we see emerging trends of innovation and agility, sustainability, and a belief in diversity. For Wärtsilä these are not just what they do, but also how they work; a company that places its values at the centre of its corporate culture, both internally with its teams, and externally with clients.

Finally, as always, please take note of our Job Board and a) take advantage of it if your company has an opening and b) send links to friends and family so that we can attract new people into our sector. We all need the help!

Stay safe and I am looking forward to seeing you soon,

Colin Cooke

Member Spotlight

Wärtsilä Canada Incorporated

Wärtsilä Canada Incorporated has been in Canada over 30 years and counts more than 130 staff in three locations across the country. Wärtsilä is a world leader in marine technology providing the sector with a wide product portfolio of integrated and innovative marine power solutions, including power generation, propulsion, automation, power distribution and drives. The company is also involved in the energy sector. Headquartered in Finland, Wärtsilä is present in 68 countries and serves over 50% of the world’s marine and offshore vessels with marine products and services. That international know-how and deep values of sustainability, accountability, worker safety and standards, and diversity is brought to the work in Canada.

Yasemin Mensah, Global General Manager for the energy storage business line and also part of the local Canadian management board, speaks eloquently of Wärtsilä’s approach and impact on the Canadian marine sector. As a new immigrant to Canada from Turkey in 2007, the first job she applied for was with Wärtsilä, “As a newcomer, finding a job can be a challenge, and I felt it was a blessing to land a job that suited me so well.” She has not looked back since! The Canadian management team she is part of is equally represented by men and women, and the company is “nicely blended and pays attention to every element of diversity,” as Yasemin describes it.

The future looks very bright for Wärtsilä in Canada as a best value and reliable provider for government and civilian markets. A recent acquisition of British Columbia-based port solutions company, Portlink Global, has allowed Wärtsilä to strengthen its expertise in the smart port sector and enhance its focus on environmental sustainability in shipping.

Yasemin has found it gratifying to work for a company that places its values at the forefront of its business. Wärtsilä strongly focuses on decarbonisation and is offering sustainable solutions to its customers and expects employees of the company to look at environmental and social accountability in all aspects of their work. The company culture is to “be better, do better” and this is evident in the products, processes and the personal commitments that employees make to their communities through voluntarism. This strong culture is important to Yasemin as a female professional and has kept her at Wärtsilä all these years.

Yasemin has been able to take advantage of the professional development opportunities offered to all employees as well as participating in the many different working groups that cross units in the company. Being part of internal and external networks, such as MIAC-Marine Industry Advisory Committee and CMISA, is very valuable to Yasemin, as she feels strongly that a company can’t accomplish its mission alone. Collaboration and communication within the industry are essential.
