From Colin's Desk

Hello all,

Welcome to another edition of On Watch! Colin is on vacation right now but will be back for our next edition. While he’s away, there are still many things happening and lots to report on so let’s get right to it.

In this edition we feature Arrow Marine Services Limited’s Madison Kerr. Madison is one of the new breed of women flocking to the trades, and as a welder has found a rewarding career at West Coast shipyard Arrow Marine. Member Spotlights are one way that we focus on telling stories about our members and increasing their visibility. If anyone reading this is not a member or knows of someone who would like to be a members, please join here.

I hope you enjoy this edition of On Watch with news from across our sector, both here and abroad, procurement opportunities, events and more.

All the best! The Team for:

Arrow Marine Services Limited

Arrow Marine Services Limited (Arrow Marine) is a West Coast-based full-service shipyard for fishing vessels, tugboats, barges, custom float structures and other marine equipment. Arrow Marine operates year-round and its location at the mouth of the Fraser River makes it accessible by both land and sea. As a subsidiary of Arrow Transportation System Inc., founded in 1919, Arrow Marine’s transportation history is intricately linked to British Columbia and Canadian history.

This deep history and experience is part of what makes Arrow Marine unique. As Arrow Marine welder Madison Kerr says, “We bring a lot of tradition and history, and so many local stories. Although we are a bigger shipyard, the environment is very close-knit and personal.”  The supportive side of Arrow Marine is what Madison appreciates. The team looks out for each other, particularly regarding safety. As Madison puts it, “You know who will take over from you, so you take great care to ensure that everything is done right. We care about each other, and our company extends that in caring for our community and our customers.”

Arrow Marine’s experience is invaluable as ship repair involves a lot of unknowns. “Every ship is unique and different,” she says, “and what I enjoy so much is that repair is like a puzzle, and you have to do a lot of problem-solving.” Obtaining Green Marine Certification is also a benefit that is attractive to clients and government, as environmental compliance certification demonstrates that Arrow Marine is helping protect the sensitive marine environments along coastal British Columbia.

It's been quite the jump for Madison with her early training in art school and her interest in producing works of art in metal. This led her to undergo additional training and certification in the trades as a welder. Although women are still underrepresented in trades such as welding, Madison is seeing more interest amongst women in these in-demand jobs than ever before. And at Arrow Marine, Madison appreciates how she is treated like any other member of the crew, as her teammates appreciate her work and her professionalism.

As a member of CMISA, Madison feels that there is great value for Arrow Marine in forging connections with other companies in the marine industry. Developing that rapport and being part of the community is important.

Marine Safety Management System Regulations

The Marine Safety Management System Regulations have been published in the Canada Gazette, Part II and have entered into force. The Regulations introduce safety management system requirements for the majority of Canada’s domestic vessel fleet. The Regulations divide Canada’s vessel fleet into five classes, each with its own set of safety management system requirements and oversight requirements. The class in which a vessel is placed is determined by its size, type, and operation.

HMCS Sackville

HMCS Sackville is the last surviving WWII corvette, and she needs your financial support to keep her afloat. These “cheap and nasties” were born out of a need to defend convoys from the German U-boat threat. Like their French naval predecessors, Canadian corvettes were built on an old single-hulled whaler design. We re-plated over the original steel in 2020, however Sackville requires a new hull to remain in the water for posterity.
