Words from the CEO |
Welcome to the latest edition of On Watch, and I hope you enjoy reading the selection of newsworthy items and that you peruse the marine procurement opportunities listed in the Resources section. In the past few months, we have written features on our members for each edition. This time we are featuring one of our own, CMISA’s Director of Marketing and Operations, Johanna Roach, and her experiences and views as she helps build this national association for the marine sector. When we began to shine the spotlight on our members in On Watch, it was a happy coincidence that the first three articles featured women, and since then we have continued to speak to female leaders in the sector. An overarching theme that emerges in these articles is that of change and innovation, and that to move forward companies need to focus on bringing in a diverse set of voices, capabilities and ways of thinking. We urge our member companies to reach out to us and let us feature the talented women in their ranks to continue to demonstrate the strengths that embracing diversity brings our sector. And should you wish to become a member, please contact communications@cmisa.ca and we would be thrilled to add your voice to our association.
Happy reading, and please feel free to share this newsletter with your colleagues and contacts.

CEO and President

Member Spotlight: Canadian Marine Industries and Shipbuilding Association |

The Canadian Marine Industries and Shipbuilding Association (CMISA) is the national body for Canadian marine industry suppliers, services and shipbuilding. Founded in 2018, the organization is growing rapidly and attracting new members from all areas of the sector, both defence and commercial, who are looking to connect with the wider community. Johanna Roach, Director of Marketing and Operations, was attracted to the start-up energy that building a new and much-needed association brings, and transitioned out of a long career in event management and business development to help bring CMISA to life. The timing for a new association was perfect, as Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy was getting into high gear and looked increasingly promising for marine companies across Canada. These industries possess so much innovation and know-how, as Johanna says, “One of our biggest assets is our intellectual property; we have such knowledge and capability in Canada, especially in high tech areas such as electronics and command-and-control systems, and we can do amazing things.”
The key issue Johanna sees is the slow speed at which procurement works in Canada, and this is where Johanna feels that CMISA can show leadership and guidance in bringing government procurement officials to a greater understanding of our industry and requirements, and eventually to help reduce these procurement impediments. She also sees CMISA building greater ties with the US and Europe, as well as what is called the FVEY countries (Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand) that will support increased trading partnerships with Canada’s marine sector. Building a strong trading block within Canada is a strategic direction for CMISA to take in the future. Today members benefit from a stronger voice in Ottawa, particularly around “Buy-in-Canada” messaging. Johanna particularly enjoys promoting the successes of members, and helping them network and partner with other companies. Johanna notes that what we have in Canada is “a community that bonds through a mutual passion for all things marine,” which, as a hobby sailor and diver, is something she can relate to!
