From Colin's Desk

Hello all,

Welcome to another edition of On Watch! I am recently back from a very productive week in St John’s where CMISA held its AGM, I attended the PSPC MIAC meetings, and where both Sandra and I had a chance to connect with many of our members at Mari-Tech. Notwithstanding the numerous travel challenges that more than a few folks had that week, I know that excellent meetings were had by many in between the informative presentations. And I am certain that I speak for many when I say that the evening events were superb and that we are all looking forward to see what the organizing team in Montreal does to top them next year!

Some CMISA news today: at our AGM, I had the great pleasure of announcing a new member of our CMISA team! Darren Mierau, whom many of you know either from his days with the RCMP Marine unit or before that with the RCN, has now joined us. He will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays going forward and you are more than welcome to reach out to him to say hello via projects(at)cmisa.ca. We are very much looking forward to sharing his expertise with everyone on a number of projects very soon. As well, a huge thank you to Darcy Byrtus (BMT) and Jason Aspin (AKA) who have come to the end of their terms on the CMISA board of directors and a warm welcome to Ben Valcour (Thales) and Marlene Conway-Diels (Envision) who are joining us. We will have some more from the board perspective before too long – once our new members have a chance to get settled in.

In the meantime, enjoy this edition of On Watch with news from across our sector, both here and abroad, procurement opportunities, events and more.

Happy reading!

Finland Trip Spotlight

B2B in Finland

Thank You!

In early May I had the pleasure of participating in a delegation to Finland led by Naval Québec to learn about their marine sector and for business development. Beginning in Helsinki with a visit to Helsinki Shipyard, which is now owned and operated by Davie, we were hosted by CEO Kim Salmi, given a tour of the yard and participated in very insightful B2B meetings and discussions with Finnish companies. We ended a productive day with a reception at the Helsinki City Hall hosted by Mayor Juhana Vartiainen.

The following day we had a Helsinki-oriented agenda and visited Aker Arctic’s offices and ice tank, ABB Marine & Ports azipod centre and Aalto University’s ice tank, with company presentations and capability discussions at each. The Canadian Ambassador to Finland Jeanette Stovel hosted us in the evening at the Canadian Official Residence.

Subsequent days took us to three other Finnish cities to visit two more shipyards, engage local marine industry companies, while expanding our knowledge and understanding of the breadth of the sector scattered across the country. In Turku we visited the Meyer Turku Shipyard, Elomatic, and Almaco while also connecting with other firms. We then visited the town of Rauma and the Rauma Marine Constructions Shipyard and the propulsion solution producer, Steerprop, with a final day in Vaasa to visit Wärtsilä and Danfoss.

I think that it’s safe to say that the marine sector in Finland is impressive. The team at Davie is working hard at securing a solid order book for the Helsinki Shipyard and as they do, I believe that many Canadian firms will have opportunities to enter the Finnish marine space. From there, the potential for all our companies is excellent.

Please reach out to me anytime should you wish to know more details about the trip or to secure ideas/contacts as I would be more than happy to share anything that I might have.

HMCS Sackville

HMCS Sackville is the last surviving WWII corvette, and she needs your financial support to keep her afloat. These “cheap and nasties” were born out of a need to defend convoys from the German U-boat threat. Like their French naval predecessors, Canadian corvettes were built on an old single-hulled whaler design. We re-plated over the original steel in 2020, however Sackville requires a new hull to remain in the water for posterity.
