From Colin's Desk

Welcome to another edition of On Watch! It’s been a very busy season for conferences and I always welcome the opportunity to meet so many members while also introducing new members to our association. I’ll be at the International Workboat Show in New Orleans at the Team Canada booth (3761) this week so please reach out if you’re attending and we will do our best to make some connections for you.

Also at the Workboat Show will be our feature member in this edition’s Member Spotlight, Vector Powerboats, Inc., so do look out for them as well. Robin Broderick, Vector Powerboats’ Director of Operations, discusses the quality, speed and stability that the boats bring to the company’s commercial, consumer and military clients, as well as the adaptability that these platforms bring, so that each client can customize which equipment can be integrated on board. Member Spotlights are one way that we focus on telling stories about our members and increasing their visibility. If anyone reading this is not a member or knows of someone who would like to be a member, please join here.

A quick comment for those of you who receive our newsletter on a Gmail account. It has come to our attention that you actually don’t see the entire newsletter unless you open it fully. This means that you won’t get to see our list of maritime Canada Buys opportunities that appears a little farther down the page and that summary is always worth at least a glance as it gives you a sense as to what is happening with government projects. Definitely worth a look!

I hope you enjoy this edition of On Watch with news from across our sector, both here and abroad, procurement opportunities, events and more. And I hope to see you at some of the shows!

All the best!

Colin Cooke

Vector Powerboats Inc. (VPI) develops and delivers boats for military, commercial and consumer markets. Founded in 2006 by Rex Jardine, with a group of experienced boat design and manufacturing professionals, VPI was initially focussed on high-performance recreational boats that are recognized as being amongst the fastest boats in the world. The platform VPI developed performed exceptionally well, winning several prestigious powerboat races.

Since 2015, VPI has been developing vessels for military and search and rescue clients with boats that can perform in these demanding applications. These boats are engineered to accommodate advanced technologies such as sonar, unmanned systems, and weaponry. The platforms that VPI offers are flexible and adaptable and can take on specialized equipment to best meet each client’s needs.

VPI’s boats are designed for speed and stability, and, as Director of Operations Robin Broderick says, "The boats are both high-performance and beautifully crafted, combining flawless design with expert engineering. VPI’s team brings decades of experience, and our commitment to quality reflects a refined, apprentice-driven approach to craftsmanship." That deep passion for boats is carried on to the team.  As Robin says, “I couldn’t ask for a better fit for me. In my teens, I lived on sailboats, and that gave me a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and resilience on the water – values we uphold every day at VPI.”

Having trained as an artist before embarking on a career in public relations, strategic planning and operations, Robin is appreciative of the flawless design of VPI’s boats. She is also attracted to the innovation and embracing of new technologies she sees in the workshops. In an industry with lots of innovation, VPI is moving forward with new platforms that build on its reputation for excellence in design and performance, as well as developing long-term relationships with local companies on boat repair projects. The company is also working on building fleets of boats which can be customized.

This focus on design and excellence is something that Robin appreciates, as well as a workplace where, as she puts it, "We prioritize trust and inclusivity, creating a collaborative environment where every team member can contribute fully to our mission of delivering exceptional vessels tailored to our clients’ unique needs." Sharing knowledge and connecting with other companies in the industry is something that is important to VPI, and Robin values the connections that CMISA affords and that will help VPI network with other companies in an industry that is spread out across the country.

HMCS Sackville

HMCS Sackville is the last surviving WWII corvette, and she needs your financial support to keep her afloat. These “cheap and nasties” were born out of a need to defend convoys from the German U-boat threat. Like their French naval predecessors, Canadian corvettes were built on an old single-hulled whaler design. We re-plated over the original steel in 2020, however Sackville requires a new hull to remain in the water for posterity.
