Words from the CEO |
Welcome to another edition of On Watch which is landing in your inboxes during one of the first face to face meeting events for the marine sector in Canada since the pandemic disrupted our lives. Many of us are here in Halifax at DefSec Atlantic 2021 and after so many months of virtual meetings, it is so refreshing to be able to meet in person. I welcome the opportunity to get fresh ideas and to find out more about how our Association can best meet your needs going forward while I’m here at the conference.
Our Member Spotlight this edition features ABB’s Erin Hartquist. ABB Marine Canada is at the forefront of sustainable technology, and is bringing the type of innovations we have seen in the automotive sector to the marine sector. ABB has also been recognized for its commitment to helping women achieve success in leadership positions, and was awarded Women in Governance Parity Certification Silver status. We are thrilled to feature our members in these Spotlights, and to share their innovations and good news. If you would like to join our growing number of members and enjoy our attractive member benefits, including original editorial content like these Member Spotlights, please contact support@cmisa.ca and we would be thrilled to get you on board.

ABB is a leading technology company at the forefront of sustainability. ABB connects software to electrification, robotics, automation’ and motion. ABB has provided over 100 years of technological innovation in Canada, with 3,000 employees in 32 locations across the country. In the marine sector, ABB Marine & Ports Division has been helping clients such as the Canadian Coast Guard and the Royal Canadian Navy achieve more sustainable operations, as well as more green and environmentally friendly propulsion systems for new vessel builds. From cranes with optical character recognition that help port automation systems become more efficient, hybrid propulsion systems for ice breakers that provide improved energy storage, to shore connection capabilities, ABB’s solutions drive sustainability by reducing carbon emissions, preserving resources, and promoting social progress.
Erin Hartquist, Regional Manager, Americas, is enthusiastic about the projects that she has been involved in in North America. Many of us can remember getting up close and personal with Niagara Falls on the iconic Maid of the Mist passenger boats. ABB has now enabled these new zero-emission tour ferries to run purely on electric propulsion. Not only are the electric motors powered by battery packs, but they are charged using hydroelectricity produced from the Niagara River, so the entire energy cycle for the Maid of the Mists is emissions free. “I was extremely lucky to be able to go to Niagara Falls and experience these ferries myself,” Erin attests, “and it’s great that there are lots of incentives nowadays to move in that direction. What we have been seeing in the automotive sector in terms of electric solutions is now coming to the maritime sector.”
From tugs, ferries to large luxury cruise ships, sustainability is embedded into the ABB culture, including the LEED-certified silver Montreal Headquarters, to its supply and value chains. As Erin says, “We also require more of ourselves, we need to live that value.” ABB welcomes a diverse workforce and has been particularly supportive of women in leadership development. For its support of women in the organization, ABB Canada was awarded Silver status under the Women in Governance Parity Certification. In her 14 years at ABB, Erin experienced the openness and transparency in the corporate policies that allow her to succeed within the company while starting a family. As a member of the Canadian Marine Industries and Shipbuilding Association, Erin values that the Association brings like-minded people together so that they can have discussions on what is next in the sector. As well, she appreciates the focus on female leaders in the sector through the Association, as she puts it, “You always want to see people like yourself in your industry and it’s important to highlight the contributions that women make in a sector that is changing rapidly, from the adoption of sustainable practices to building a diverse workforce.”
