From Colin's Desk

Welcome to another edition of On Watch! We are in the midst of the busy fall show season and it was great to see so many members and subscribers in person at DefSec two weeks back. As always, please do reach out to me anytime to continue our many discussions and to follow up on any ideas that came up since then. I look forward to seeing many more of you at upcoming events.

We return to our Member Spotlights in this edition featuring one of Shawflex’s up-and-coming engineers, Fairuz Rashid. Speaking with Fairuz gives an insight into how complex custom cable design and manufacturing is, especially for marine customers who have very specific requirements for cables that need to work in harsh marine environments. Fairuz exemplifies a generation of women and men who are forging new and rewarding careers in our sector and thrive in supportive workplaces like the one that Shawflex offers. Member Spotlights are one way that we focus on telling stories about our members and increasing their visibility.

If anyone reading this is not a member or knows of someone who would like to be a member, please join here.

I hope you enjoy this edition of On Watch with news from across our sector, both here and abroad, procurement opportunities, events and more. And I hope to see you at the shows!

All the best!

Member Spotlight

Shawflex

Shawflex is a Canadian company that has been manufacturing cables for over 60 years. Shawflex’s cables are highly engineered and can be customized to the requirements of each customer. Services offered include custom cable design and assemblies, providing innovative solutions for a wide variety of customer and industries

Shawflex’s cables are well-suited for harsh marine environments, according to engineer Fairuz Rashid. As she explains, it’s “not only the harsh environment that is challenging, but also the enclosed spaces on vessels.” Shawflex provides increased customer service by providing direct access to engineering resources to create highly engineered cables to meet every customer’s specific requirement.  Fairuz says “We need to be heavily involved in the cable design for the constantly evolving needs our customers bring us. It is like solving a puzzle, from composite cable designs, increasing cable flexibility, adding steel strength members, or incorporating fibre optics to the cable constructions, all while maintaining regulatory compliances.” Every day brings new challenges and learning opportunities, and Fairuz’s daily work involves exploration, testing and collaboration with multiple different departments to find new solutions.

Shawflex is relocating to a larger facility next year to accommodate new equipment and technologies. This will allow the company to expand its product offerings and to continue to innovate and progress as the company fulfills orders for large-scale projects such as the vessels being built for the National Shipbuilding Strategy as well as the growing energy sector.

Fairuz finds the work environment at Shawflex stimulating and positive. There is a strong culture of respect, where all opinions are valued. She feels very comfortable working there and appreciates the accommodating working hours, frequent team building activities, and opportunities to give back to the community. Shawflex often participates in fundraising events such as Habitat for Humanity and Daily Bread Food Bank which Fairuz says “I so appreciate that employees are encouraged to grow, not just in the career, but as a person. “

She also sees great value in being a member of CMISA in order to have the bridge to connect with the larger marine world and to help develop strategic partnerships. Advocacy, networking events and information sharing are also membership benefits she sees as beneficial to ensure Shawflex remain competitive and knowledgeable within the marine industry.

HMCS Sackville

HMCS Sackville is the last surviving WWII corvette, and she needs your financial support to keep her afloat. These “cheap and nasties” were born out of a need to defend convoys from the German U-boat threat. Like their French naval predecessors, Canadian corvettes were built on an old single-hulled whaler design. We re-plated over the original steel in 2020, however Sackville requires a new hull to remain in the water for posterity.
