Shipbuilding in Canada is a booming business with great potential and opportunities. Adaptive Marine Solutions, Inc. (AMS) fills a need for 3D modelling, drafting and marine consulting and engineering for new construction as well as for vessel refits and modernization. As structural engineer and naval architect at AMS, Qianran Zhang says, “We are good at tackling challenges. There is ‘adaptive’ in the company name, as we adapt to deliver what the client needs and expects, ready to put into use.”

Qianran, a civil engineer with prior experience in the oil and gas sector, joined AMS when it was still a young company, focussed on modelling and detail design for combat ships. AMS soon expanded their capabilities into more design and research and development projects, such as towing vessel upgrades, ice breaker concept design and vessel refits. AMS’ problem-solving abilities comes from a combination of the experience from its senior designers and engineers, together with a desire from the team to explore new capabilities and apply new technologies. Experience, innovation and mature quality assurance processes allows AMS to deliver quality packages under very tight deadlines.

A client-focussed company, AMS takes the time to thoroughly understand project requirements and unique client needs. Throughout the project they continue to focus on the client by providing clear communication through to final delivery. AMS brings in new graduates, engineers and designers who help determine the applicability of new technologies and approaches to client projects. Qianran explains that leveraging new technologies such as 3D scanning can help every step of a vessel’s modernization, which affords many opportunities to work more efficiently. Driving this innovation is the talent, experience and motivation embedded in the team. As Qianran says, “I work with people who have great experience and enthusiasm in ship building. That is why the team has pulled off so many challenging projects, and I see great potential in our team.” Networking with other marine sector companies and finding out more about what is new in the industry are key reasons she values AMS’s membership in CMISA.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is distancing the Liberal government from a $100-million contract under which a Chinese state-owned shipyard will build a passenger ferry for a federal Crown corporation, a deal the Conservative Party vows to cancel if elected.

Building a large ship requires a significant amount of engineering and manufacturing time. 

The National Transportation Safety Board has released its Safer Seas Digest 2020, a compendium of the NTSB’s maritime accident investigations involving loss of life, injuries and significant property damage completed in 2020.

Babcock Canada is a large prime contractor with interests in the defence, civil and commercial domains. 

Seaspan Shipyards has kicked in $75,000 to support the B.C. Tech Association’s Digital Lift internship program that has been designed to draw new people into the tech sector.

Two new electric ferries for the Kingston region have now been built in Europe and are on their way to Canada.

Marine Atlantic has found itself at the centre of an international conflict involving China.

GE Marine announced it has renewed a long-term, customized service agreement (CSA) with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). The CSA covers an operating fleet of 24 GE LM2500 aeroderivative marine gas turbines plus spare engines used to power Halifax class frigates.

In late May 2021, the Israeli armed forces destroyed an armed underwater uninhabited vehicle (UUV)1 operated by the terrorist group Hamas.

London, September 6 – The global trade association for ship operators, the International Chamber of Shipping, (ICS) has put forward a comprehensive proposal for a global levy on carbon emissions from ships, in what would be a first for any industrial sector.
