From Colin's Desk

Colin Cooke

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the maritime industries of Canada, I wish to express my sincere condolences and profound regret at the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Throughout her lifetime of service to Canada and the entire Commonwealth, she has been an inspiration to us all.

In this edition we are bringing you our first Environmental Spotlight, featuring Green Marine’s standalone criteria development for Shipyards which aims to help yard owners and managers measure their progress towards environmental sustainability. Stay tuned for more news coming out of the workgroup which is reviewing ideas and developing the program requirements specifically for shipyards. We will be returning to our regular Member Spotlight next edition.

If you are reading On Watch for the first time thanks to it being passed along to you, you are welcome to sign up for future editions here –  it’s free and we never share your emails with anyone. We publish our newsletter every two weeks and bring you news, procurement opportunities and features that pertain to our sector. Please take note of our Job Board and a) take advantage of it if your company has an opening and b) send links to friends and family so that we can attract new people into our sector. We all need the help!

I aim to attend DefSec in Halifax next month so please do get in touch if you will be attending as well. Stay safe and I am looking forward to seeing you soon,

Green Marine Shipyards’ standalone criteria development

A nearly doubling of this category of participants in the past year reflects a new era for shipyard owners/managers who are clearly seeking a formalized template to measure their environmental progress. As a result, Green Marine is now in the process of establishing distinct program requirements specifically for shipyards rather than continuing to have them assess their performance based on the criteria for terminal operators.

A workgroup, led by Green Marine Program Manager Brittney Blokker, has been created to review the program’s criteria for shipyards and measure the requirements’ relevance, topicality, and applicability. The group has met three times so far, and the work is already underway and expected to be completed in time to report on their 2023 performance.

View the current 2022 performance indicators’ criteria applicable to terminals and shipyards.

To date, the workgroup held three meetings and has prioritized revisions to the 2022 performance indicators criteria requiring updates and adaptation to apply to shipyards in the standalone program requirements. The group has discussed additional shipyard operations/activities and environmental issues to add to the program, including air pollution concerns from sandblasting, painting, and coating application/removal, hazardous waste management, ship recycling, and more. Additional criteria and performance indicators addressing these topics and expanding the program scope will be added in 2023 and beyond.

The workgroup will meet three times in September and October to pursue the shipyard’s program requirements adaptation. If you have any questions or are interested in learning more about Green Marine or this program development, contact Brittney Blokker by email at Brittney.blokker@green-marine.org.
