Welcome to another edition of On Watch! And we’re off. It’s the end of summer and folks are busy struggling with overflowing inboxes while some have already headed off for the first of the fall conferences. I realize that many of you are busy with your plans and order books, but when you have a few minutes for a break and a coffee, please explore what we have in our newsletter this week.

We have a special Spotlight in this edition, featuring a women’s network at Seaspan Shipyards. Shespan+ has over 250 women from all disciplines at the yard, and enjoys strong senior management support. Shespan+ is an excellent example of the growing numbers of women in the marine sector, and the kinds of networks that can help ensure their success. We hope that their story inspires groups of like-minded individuals at other yards and companies as it has proven to be very valuable on the west coast. Our Member Spotlights are one way that we focus on telling stories about our member companies and increasing their visibility. If anyone reading this is not a member or knows of someone who would like to become one, please join here.

I hope you enjoy this edition of On Watch with news from across our sector, both here and abroad, procurement opportunities, events and more.

All the best!

Shespan+

Shipbuilding has traditionally been an industry where mainly men worked. These days, more and more women work in the yards, and there are so many reasons for women to consider a long and fulfilling career in shipbuilding. Seaspan Shipyards is exemplary in this regard as it is home to a growing women’s network, called Shespan+.

In 2022, a Seaspan employee seeded the idea of a network to a small group of women, realizing that women could benefit from a space to share their experiences, to network, and to seek guidance from each other. 14 employees formed the original Shespan+ group through a Microsoft Teams thread. They organized a social gathering for female and female-identifying employees, and almost 90 people attended that networking event! Seaspan senior management fully approved of the group, and within a few weeks the network grew to over 100 members from across the company.

The group now numbers 250 members across all disciplines in the yard. Shespan+ has facilitated over 10 discussion sessions, hosted bimonthly knowledge cafés, and organized social evenings. Shespan+ aims to provide support, networking opportunities, and a forum for gender issues and equality to be discussed with women and female-identifying people at Seaspan. The group is a safe space for members to speak freely and benefit from collective empathy and strength, provide networking opportunities to enable connections between group members from diverse experiences and backgrounds, and support the development of leadership skills.

Jessica Fetterman, Chief Engineer, Ship Design-Polar, has been with Seaspan for over three years, after many years of experience in ship maintenance. She has been a member of Shespan+ since the early days of the network. Her own family background is a maritime one, and she is happy to follow in the footsteps on her father and grandfather. From being one of a very small group of women in her graduating class in marine engineering at the University of Michigan, Jessica has noticed that these days universities are seeing much more gender-balanced classes.

According to Jessica, it’s clear why a women’s network thrives at Seaspan. The yard leverages a lot of input from its employees and works hard to attract more women. One great example is how Seaspan partnered with Helga Wear, a company that produces safety wear for women, to design properly fitting PPE for women working in trades at Seaspan. Jessica discusses how there is space for women, with solid career opportunities, and no tolerance for discrimination or harassment. She speaks highly of Seaspan’s positive human resource practice of listing pay bands, as salary transparency is so important in recruiting and retraining employees. A fair workplace is an attractive workplace for all employees, but salary transparency is particularly important for female employees and those belonging to other equity-seeking groups as they can see that there is no pay discrimination and that pay is position-dependent and not influenced by gender or other factors.

Jessica is very appreciative of the support for Shespan+ that senior management of Seaspan demonstrates. As Dave Hargreaves, Senior VP of Strategy, Business Development and Communications, says, “Seaspan is proud to support the Shespan+ group, which provides support and networking opportunities for women and women-identifying people within Seaspan across both trades and salaried positions. With over 200 members, the group has expanded significantly and has become a space for group members to share diverse experiences and support one another.” Indeed, the support for Shespan+ speaks to Seaspan’s desire for a fair workplace which aims to attract and keep employees from underrepresented groups, as well as provide the space for grassroots women-led networks.

HMCS Sackville

HMCS Sackville is the last surviving WWII corvette, and she needs your financial support to keep her afloat. These “cheap and nasties” were born out of a need to defend convoys from the German U-boat threat. Like their French naval predecessors, Canadian corvettes were built on an old single-hulled whaler design. We re-plated over the original steel in 2020, however Sackville requires a new hull to remain in the water for posterity.
